The Galveston Island Humane Society is an open intake facility.

We accept all animals impounded by the Galveston Police Department’s Animal Services Unit.

We also accept animals from the public under a number of different circumstances.

Please bear in mind that due to jurisdiction and our limited space we only accept animals from Galveston Island and are not able to utilize our resources for animals coming from other locations. If you need help with which facility to contact for an animal coming from another location we can point you in the right direction.

We do accept owner surrendered animals for Galveston Island Residents by appointment.

As part of our mission to save all adoptable pets, we have adopted a policy requiring appointments for owner surrenders. The shelter is consistently at or over capacity and owners are encouraged to attempt to re-home their pets on their own if possible. For those who need our assistance with rehoming, while awaiting your appointment date we can begin networking and promoting your animal in hopes of reducing the time the animal spends in the shelter. Please consider that you know your pet best, so please be their advocate and complete the questionnaire to the best of your ability.

While we have enjoyed great success placing animals into new homes, we are not able to guarantee a positive outcome for every animal entering our facility. You will be required to sign a consent form acknowledging that euthanasia could be a possibility.

Intake at the shelter for stray animals can be accomplished by contacting
